A Classification Counselor assesses and evaluates the personal and criminal history of adult inmates to recommend a security level and in developing and monitoring appropriate work and educational programs. Possesses the ability to conduct effective interviews with arrested and incarcerated individuals to obtain demographic information in order to determine potential risk and immediate needs of inmates. They recommend proper housing and refer to designated providers of health, mental health or other needed services. Provide supervision and training to Classification Counselor Trainees. To be successful in this position, the employee must have a general understanding of Directives and General Orders, officer safety, learn the geographical layout of the Wicomico County Detention Facility, train in defensive and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving and team building skills. Considered “essential” personnel.
